Disclaimer: I am NOT bashing this con, simply giving an honest review of how things went and what I personally think could have been done better. Since this was a one day event I figured a review format would fit better. I left out for MoTown Con around 8 AM and started the small 50 minute drive to Moorseville. Getting there and setting up was relatively smooth and uneventful. I finished setting up my table mostly just as they opened the Vendor Hall to attendees at 11 AM. The folks here were super kind, both staff and the attendees. Staff were more than helpful, both before the con and during the con. They were able to answer any and all my questions and helped me when I needed it at the con. (Shout out to the furry staff members, you guys were super chill and I loved chatting at each of you!) Attendees were relatively chatty and pretty interested in my work, though I seemed to have slower/less traffic through my vendor area. (I was table C2) At 11 AM when the hall opened folks were pretty consistent in going through the vendor hall and checking things out. But as with most events it seemed to mostly be browsing to start with before buying anything. By 12 PM I had started to make sales and it was honestly the most traffic I had gotten all day long. The rest of the time spent here was incredibly slow. The vendor hall closed at 6 PM and the entire time from 1 PM till closing the vendor hall remained kind of empty with attendees trickling in every so often. I even had time at one point to head outside and get some really good Italian ice from the mini doughnut/Italian ice food vendor. (100% some of the best Italian Ice I've ever had.) Sales were honestly abysmal and this con definitely takes the cake for the worst event I have ever done profit wise. I just barely made back my table and $15 of profit when the day was over and done. I hadn't expected a lot from a one day event anyway having not really done only a one day event before but this honestly left a sour taste in my mouth as I packed up and headed home. I arrived home around 9 PM, incredibly tired, had some subway, and went to sleep. Overall thoughts: While I didn't get to really experience anything going on at this convention I would say attendees seemed to have had a lot of fun and event wise it seemed pretty well put together despite the venue issue before hand. Staff handled the changes and any blows that came their way pretty well! On the vendor side of things however, I feel as if the event itself had way TOO MANY vendors for such a small event. :(( From what I saw and was told, there were 61 vendors for an event that maybe brought in roughly one thousand people. Due to the sheer amount of vendors some of us barely even made enough to have justified driving to the event and selling. Money was definitely thin for attendees and I can imagine why, especially when they had to look through so many vendors and they could only spend their money at so many places/get around to so many vendors. Advice to MoTown Con Organizers for Future Events: You guys did exceptionally well organizing the event, answering questions, running the event, etc. But this is my advice for other areas of the con that can be improved and personally would have elevated my experience at the event.
